How many of you were actually planning of going to
Well for all you cricket lovers out there; let’s have a little reality check. In case you loose your passport or any other official document by ‘MISTAKE’ and you happen to be a poor Pakistani on an Indian land then chances are that you might end up dead after six years of physical torture. Like this cricket loving poor fellow; Khalid Mahmood, who went to watch the Mohali test but never came back.
4th March 2008, Obaid ullah was watching Kashmir Singhs return to his loved ones. Celebrations on the Wagah border, dances, music, happy faces and loads of Indian and Pakistani Media coverage. One hour later the phone rungs, Obaid answers the phone and found out that his brother Khalid died on the 28th of February (about a week ago). I wonder what took them this long to inform.
Now I want to go back in history when Khalid was in a prison near
The same Wagah border that was all festive few days ago was depicting sorrow and grief. Every eye was wet. Khalid’s mother, sisters and brothers were crying their heart out but there was no Govt official to condole them. The role of the Pakistani High commission was predictably hopeless, it was a small case of passport misplacement but why would they help an innocent Pakistani when our own local jails are filled with innocent souls.
I was expecting some kind of protest from the Indian community not on official level but certainly from the human rights groups and activists. Unlike our country
In fact the blood of Muslims is the cheapest at this time of the year, especially when that Muslim happens to be a Pakistani.
The unfortunate question on every Pakistani’s mouth; is this how the Indians return a favor?

well my brother I can’t be sure that whether he was a spy or not but u have talked abt the favour. Allow me to tell you that the huge broadcast of the kashmir singh case was just to increase the popularity of Ansar Barni or may be of Musharaf. I didnt understand the theory that Ansar wanted to drop kashmir singh at his home….wht the f…???? No one has raised voice for khalid… y??? May Allah give him peace and make his way for heaven.
We all saw kashmir Singh walking back to his country? He was mentally alright. But what about Khalid? Just Imagine a man in his peak health 24-30 was so badly tortured that he lost his life.
He got less media coverage because the following day we witnessed such a huge terrorist act!
Ammar,I am saddened by the death and it is very very unfortunate.
Now the reality check!//. In case you loose your passport or any other official document by ‘MISTAKE’ and you happen to be a poor Pakistani on an Indian land then chances are that you might end up dead after six years of physical torture.//what was the Pakistan embassy doing for the last 6 years? How much time would it take to make a temporary passport? This is the norm in case of a lost passport all over the world.I personally know people who lost their passport in a foreign land and were issued a duplicate passport in that country itself.
//They daily use to pour steamy hot water on his head, which resulted in permanent lost of hair. They also nailed his feet while torturing that made him handicap.//don’t believe all what is said.It has to be exaggerated to make an impact.Did anyone from Pakistan human rights agencies complaint to any court or human rights commision(which is independent and has pulled up the high and mighty regularly).Aunty Asma is in India meeting the who’s who of India every second month. We expect protest from her and her likes and let me assure you it would have been all over the media and after that no one would have dared to torture any innocent.
//Who will protest for a Pakistani Muslim :P// you perhaps don’t have any idea, we have parties who make money out of muslim miseries(not the sangh parivar). Do you know there is a big political party here who demanded that Pakistan should be compensated after India conducted the nuclear tests because as a result Pakistan had to conduct nuclear test.As a result sanctions were imposed and Pakistan suffered economically.
//In fact the blood of Muslims is the cheapest at this time of the year, especially when that Muslim happens to be a Pakistani.// I don’t disagree with this one although.
It has taken us 60 years to take the sting out of the venom spread by vested interests on both sides of the border. Let us not believe all what is said and think rationally and not emotionally.
Once again it is extremely unfortunate that a young life was lost.No logic or reason can bring him back to his loved ones.
I have been trying to leave a trackback, but the blogosphere is not cooperating, so I’ll try a comment.
I link to this post at:

I answer your question without equivocation.
BTW, I am ’simayanan’ on your right sidebar.
indeed it was a very unfortunate incident and this kind of attitude is witnessed time and again from INDIA. India and Pakistan can never be friends afetr this kind of behavior on Indian behalf and look at kashmir singh he was so healthy and mentally sound wen he came out after 35 yrs that proves Pakistanis wr giving him a vry good treatment.
@ Pr3rna
Nice to hear from you on this one.I belong to that section of the Pakistani community that want peace between the two nations. This incident is shocking for me because, its 2008. We are not in a state of war in comparison to other decades when incidents like these were normal. Pakistan has come a very long way to have peaceful relations with India. And such incidents will destroy everything.
Last night on Aaj TV, Talat Hussein a very re known and serious TV journalist of Pakistan did a whole program on this case. I will post the video as soon as I get my hand on it.
As far as the torture part is concerned its quite authentic. Khalids family visited him a few years ago, from their mouth we came to know about all this ill treatment on Indian Police’s behalf. They told the media what they saw there. Khalid’s brother is fighting a legal battle now in India, so that other Pakistani civilians dont end up in the same misery as Khalid did.
I have waited 2 long days to write this post, I was waiting for a sympathy reaction from the other side of the border. But no blogger, newspaper or human rights activists that you mentioned in your comment came up with this issue.
Ammar, I read this last night and cried like I lost a close family member, its truly going to leave many more of us in mourning,
I was on a local site here in england and it was talking about a 20yr old goth girl, who was kicked to death by a 15 year old schoolboy who was anti-goth, that is truly tragic, that shook me up pretty hard to think of such cruelty, and then hearing of this I was more shaken, obviously I cant deny my ties to my home country, I value a Muslim and Pakistani life, thanks for making me aware of such a case again Ammar, these sort of things are usually kept hush hush.. as all the emphasis is on fictitious shit ”how to combat terrorism” .. ”how to combat global warming” on the worlds agenda turned out to be a farce.. wonder how long it will take for them to unmask the other major item on agenda!
One thing I want to say is, I dont know why people are afraid to say someone’s wrong and make excuses for them, no-one and I mean no-one I’ve spoke to when I’ve mentioned a wrong-doing on India’s parts Ive heard a million excuses as to why it couldve happened.. yet they’re quickfire when it comes to Pakistani wrongdoings.. is it that we’re afraid of India?
@ Supe
In my point of view our priority should be the Pakistani awam. no if no buts…
when we have other issues on our list and we want everyone to be happy but the people of the country; incidents like these happen. I totally agree what you have said in your comment.
@beeca
thanx for ur comment!
Talat Hussein is a serious journalist.I have heard and seen him many times on PTV and ARY digital.Still don’t you find it strange that the Pakistani High Commision doesn’t issue a duplicate passport to an innocent citizen stranded in an Indian Jail.I haven’t witnessed too much about this case in international press. The family of the victim wait for 6 years to fight a legal battle. You may not trust the Indian Human Right groups but how about the Pakistani media. They were quiet on this issue till the poor man died.
I do not justify the torture even if he was a spy but as far as the family talking about it is concerned, you and me find the Kasmir Singh issue a positive develpoment but you should hear the press reports. One day he was a spy,the other day he was innocent. Somebody says he was forced to convert, the other person says he was tortured everyday.Your human rights minister rightly said that this sort of coverage is bad for other Indian prisoners who might be released from Pakistani jails.
The other point that I find strange is that even after there was such a ruckus about Indian prisoner Sarabjit(innocent, spy or terrorist)nobody from Pakistani side even thought about issuing duplicate papers to Khalid Mehmood. The prime minister of India got involved in the Sarabjit case and mind you he is a very very ordinary Indian not a celeberity or VIP.No questions asked about Khalid Mehmood in the international media.I remember his arrest being reported in the Indian media but after that nothing. It was not that nobody knew about him.
There was a lot of warmth and hospitability extended to the Pakistani visitors during that cricket series. Why would this poor man chosen? We see a lot of Pakistani comedians and singers on our TV(some of them are living here I guess).Your cricketers and ex-cricketers(Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus,Imran Khan to name a few) are visible in Delhi regularly. If there was hostility towards them why do you think they will come here.I feel India gains by their presence and they deserve ever bit of financial gains or respect they are recieving.
I am not disageeing with you Ammar just posing some questions because this sort of incidence bothers me as an Indian and a human.
Prerna this is not a personal dig at you being Indian, just so you know, for one I know if I heard of a similar case happening to an Indian on Pakistani soil I would be outraged equally, but please no excuses (not from you, but whenever a case like this arises) I’m sick of hearing excuses, Khalid Mehmood died a gruesome death, thats a sheer fact, its black and white here, a terrible deed was committed and we know the who the criminal is. Period.
[...] Please read this, its hard to find such info over the media elsewhere, its all being kept hush-hush. ”Is this how Indian’s return the favour?” [...]
There can be no excuse for this, accepted but please try and look beyond media reports.A terrible deed was commited again accepted, but this is not black and white. There are grey areas which need to be looked at.You should be asking questions to your people also who are equally responsible for this murder.I am not saying this as an Indian but as a human.I am repeating it again- has anybody questioned the Pakistani embassy here who have the authority of issuing a new passport.Police in the subcontinent is never above doubt but after 6 years if a citizen is languishing in jail for lack of papers, the embassy personnel are on the top of the list of criminals.
I AGREE YASIR ENOUGH OF LAME THESE LAME EXCUSES BUT THIS HORRIBLE ACT CANT BE FORGIVEN INDIANS SHD MEND THR WAYS.
@ Pr3rna
Both Pakistani High Commission and the Govt. is under media and civilians scrutiny for cases such as these. About 300 innocent civilians are in Indian jails for passport cases.Fahad, a 23 old young man of my city Karachi went to visit his relatives in Gujrat and is facing similar treatment because of Visa expiration.
And how can somebody forget the Samjhota Express case. People were locked inside and the majority died because of the suffocation and fire. I am sure that Pakistani high commission is not doing their job right. But how can they equally share the brutality at the hands of Indian police.
‘Tali dono hatho se bajti hai’ if common awam aka janta of both India and Pakistan are not benefiting form this apparent peace and friendship. Then I dont see any improvement in the near future.
thr cant be any improvement in the relationshp bw da 2 countries cx india has always nvr extended a sincere hand of friendship and sorry to say but releasing india movies in pak is not the solution to create peace and frndship bw the countries.
//However, it is strange that Mr Mehmood’s family also did not bring to the Pakistan Government’s attention the fact that Mr Mehmood had been missing for almost three years and did not return from India in April 2005. This has been confirmed by the MFA’s Spokesman. Someone must explain why he disappeared and what the real purpose of his travel was, since he did not return to Pakistan along with hundreds of other cricket fans.
While in prison, Mr Mehmood was provided medical treatment as per his symptoms from time to time. He was also referred to General Hospital, Gurgaon for specialist opinion last December when he developed abdominal distension on 1 February, 2008, he was treated at this hospital. Later, on 11 February, 2008, he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi and then transferred to AIIMS, India’s premier medical institute, for further treatment. Unfortunately, he did not respond to the treatment and succumbed to his ailment on 12 February, 2008. //I have taken this from ‘The Nation’ dated 14 March 08.This is a Pakistani newspaper Ammar.

Thank you for visiting my blog.
The government of India is a bunch of thugs and criminals! The ones who killed my family in 1984 are still in the government. The ones we know of who planned it, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar - along with Rajiv Gandhi *spits* - are still running things in India.
If the way India treats the people responsible for fighting to kick the British out and who make up much of her army is to commit genocide and try to destroy the entire community, do you expect them to treat a traditional enemy with graciousness and civility?
KHALISTAN ZINDABAD!!
Ammar, Thanks for the link.I saw the whole 41 minute video twice and it is a very painful incident.I could feel the pain in the mothers voice.Words are not enough to condemn the death of an innocent person. There are still some questions that arise.Khalid Mehmood’s case was being heard in the court and once the hearing starts there is little scope of torture.Anita Dahiya is the name of the judge mentioned in the court and she has a good reputation. The mother and brother complained about the delay in their meeting with Khalid- anybody in the subcontinent can tell you how our police works. There are large number of Pakistani prisoners in our jails and many many Indians languishing in Pakistani jails. Most of them have no access to courts. When General Mussharaf visited India families of the missing Indians requested him to free them. Kashmir Singh is one solitary incident. We need to talk about all our brothers and sisters languishing in Indian and Pakistani jails.I have heard about some NGO’s working towards that.About welcoming Indians in Pakistan, except for this particular case I don’t think anybody found Indian Hospitality lacking.Any Pakistani who watches reality shows from India can see for himself that Indian public is voting for Pakistani contestants in large numbers. It is disappointing that one incident is being used to malign a whole nation.Do you have Fortis hospital chain in Pakistan? Khalid was wearing a Fortis T-shirt in one of the photographs.
Please don’t let people like Harinder Kaur start an anti India campaign.Khalistan is in her head and despite all our flaws our Sikh brothers and sisters are happy to be Indians. For her information we in India are as hurt as her about the 84 riots. It is people like her who spread venom and hatred between communities.Sikhs would not be in the army if her word is to be believed. Our prime minister is a sikh and an honest sikh and we are proud of him.
‘Spread venom and hatred?’ Oh, my, dear prerna, I think not. I am simply telling the truth. I understand you love your Mata Bharata and feel the need to defend her.
You could not possibly be as hurt as we are about the 84 ‘riots.’ It was not until I stumbled over the bodies of my husband, son, brothers and cousins - as well as mourned the death of my two unborn children - that I had any negative feelings toward India. But that one small incident showed me that we will never have any safety until we have our homeland.
And if you hurt so badly, why are those who perpetrated the violence against us still free and happy and in power?
Is Khalistan in my head? Maybe. And in the heads of many, many others, too. You in India with your capaigns of terror against us, have for a time quieted our voices, but have you never heard that ‘just because you have silenced a man, doesn’t mean you have converted him’? Nehru and Mohandas Gandhi promised us our land, but perfidiously, retracted; perhaps you have forgotten. Many of us haven’t. I speak for myself. The Sikh community is divided on this issue.
As for PM Manmohan Singh, yes, he is a Sikh. I fear he has forgotten the full meaning of that. And one PM does not make up for the many wrongs committed against us by the Republic of India.
Just treat us with the respect we have earned in India over the centuries and we’ll quit agitating. And prosecute those who murdered us in 1984. We’ve waited a long, long time for justice!
Now, what I really came to write about. I just heard that Sarabjit Singh is to be executed on April 1. A dead body from India is to be answered with a dead body from Pakistan. And then maybe, two dead bodies from India? And on it goes.
And where will it ever end?

Ammar, its cruel of the Indians who killed Khalid brutally. No sympathy goes in for Khalids life cos such news is never gonna be publicised. Lots of politics being played as usual, nothing new in that. yes its true that the life of a Pakistani Muslim is taken for granted cos there are so many being killed daily on the border. I read once that the the families of pakistani soldiers who lost their lives never knw whether theyre loved ones are dead cos the pak army used to send letters in their names.. just to convince them tht theyre alive. Khalids life is lost and its a tragic incident, shudnt happen again. But Pakistan has made an image already that the lives of pakis isnt tht valuable. everyday ppl are dying, and all the Paki govmt wants is Kashmir, and nothing else. So theyve sent in their ammo to the kids in Kashmir and the magnificent valley is no longer open to the tourists thanks to the stupid fight going on. I dnt understd what Pak wants, why the hell do they fight for something they dnt have and just go back and stay in their own country. Partition to ho gaya na ab, now do they want a partition within a partition. When i read the news of Pakistani militants being killed on the border i feel ashamed because this isnt what a muslim should be doing. Pakistan has ruined the image of Muslims and they continue to do so. Pls stop being so stupid, get back to the basics, study and earn well, dnt crib n cry over India, develop Pakistan first and then talk. Its in a big mess today and the whole world is laughing at Pak, & as a Muslim i feel bad abt it. U need to change that image of Pak and get things better soon. I pray for the best for both countries. Pakistan has also been cruel with Indian pows and there are several incidents that prove it. The past was aweful, lets pray and hope for a better future IA.
