I am a proud member of my Pakistani nation. For the past 60 years we have been under Ayub Khan, Zia ul Haq, Yahya Khan and Pervez Musharraf. But on 18th March we have proved one thing once and for all; this country will only be ruled by the ‘People of Pakistan’ and by no military or civilian dictator.
Those who believe that we are politically unaware or uneducated, I ask them to name one country who is under so much pressure internal and external, facing this magnitude of challenges (terrorism, wheat/power crisis, etc) and still coming out as a winner with the power of vote. This country produced leaders like Muhammed Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammed Iqbal, Benazir Bhutto and ZA Bhutto. This nation produced thinkers and poets like Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ahmed Faraz and Habib Jalib.
Having said that, there is still a long way to go. But to start every journey, it takes only a single step. And the best part is we took that step on February the 18th.
The following Naz’m by Faiz Ahmed Faiz was the inspiration to every generation who faced a dictator. brilliantly sung my Madame Iqbal Bano:
Hum dekhain gay
Lazim hai kay hum bhi dekhain gay
Woh din ke jis ka wadah hai
Jo loh-e-azl pe likha hai
Hum dekhain gay
Jab zulm-o-sitam kay koh-e-garaan
Ruii ki tarah urh jain gay
Hum mehkumoon kay paun talay
Yeh dharti dhar dhar dharkay gee
Aur ahl-e-hukum kay sar uper
Jab bijli kar kar karkay gee
Hum dekhain gay
Jab arz-e-khuda kay Kaabay say
Sab but uthwaaey jaen gay
Hum ahl-e-safa mardood-e-haram
Masnad pay bithaaey jain gay
Sab taaj uchalay jain gay
Sab takht giraaey jain gay
Bas naam rahay ga Allah ka
Jo ghayab bhi hai hazir bhi
Jo nazir bhi hai manzar bhi
Uthay ga an-al-Haq ka naara
Jo main bhi hun aur tumbhi ho
Aur raaj karay gi khalq-e-khuda
Jo main bhi hun aur tum bhi ho
loh - slate
azl - beginning of eternity
koh - mountain
garaan - limit
mehkumoon - subordinates
ahl-e-hukum - rulers
arz-e-Khuda - God’s earth
ahl-e-safa - pure people
mardood-e-haram - evicted from the perimeter of the Kaaba
masnad - place of honor
an-al-Haq - I am the truth

I can understand your feelings Ammar.Congratulations!on the successful completion of the democratic process in Pakistan.
Let me put in a word of caution, politicians are politicians, never expect too much from them.
I am a big fan of Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Ahmed Faraz.I had the pleasure of listening to Ahmed Faraz live here in Delhi last year.It was a great experience. However we Indians can claim the right on Iqbal’s work before independence
After all he wrote-Saare jahan se accha Hindostan hamara ![]()
I just wait to see what will happen.
Congrats anyway.
Hey you know Guilan (Gilan) is a province in north of Iran? Does he have Iranian blood in his ancestors?!
@ Pr3rna
well i dont want to snatch the Indian claim on Allama Iqbal. But years after ’sare jaha se acha’ it was Iqbal who actually proposed the idea of two nation theory which became the basis of the establishment Pakistan. Besides India and Pakistan, Iqbal has the same rank in Iran; as his 60% of work is in Persian.
By the way thank you for your advice.
@ Shahrzad
He’s a Syed and most Syed’s in Pakistan have Iranian and Middle Eastern blood relation.
As everyone know that how Syed’s came from Arab to Iran and then ended up in the Pakistan/India Subcontinent.
Music and Literature knows no boundaries Ammar! Moreover I am claiming the work before independence :)A poet like Iqbal would be appreciated anywhere in the world.Political affiliations are a different issue.
Music and Literature knows no boundaries, true very true. But if Iqbal is equally appreciated across the border then why I only see the praise of’Sare jaha se acha!…’ why not his other more popular Kalaaam?
By the way, Iqbal died long before the Independence ![]()
Sorry Ammar,I didn’t know that Iqbal died before independence. It is not very easy to understand Iqbal. You have yourself mentioned that 60% of his work is in Persian.Even Indian poets who are popular among the general public are the ones who write for films( Javed akhtar,Gulzar, Sahir Ludhianvi etc).People who are fond of good poetry read people from all over the world.Saare jahaan se accha is popular because the language is easy to understand, the music is good and is patriotic.Faiz is very popular here in India, so is Ghulam Ali and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.It doesn’t matter where he is from.
Have you seen’Khuda Ke Liye’? It is releasing here next week.I would love to watch it but only if it is not depressing. This film is getting lots of publicity in India.
Yes I have, but I am sure Indian public wont be able to relate to the problems faced by the Pakistani Muslims of 2008.
I would like to read the reaction of the Bharti movie critics on Khuda Kai Liye.
//but I am sure Indian public wont be….
easy guy, things are not black and white! People from Delhi cant understand problems of people from Mumbai, but I am sure they would acknowledge them.
Good to know that Pakistan has a democratic government now and lets hope that it lasts for a longer term.
btw, congrats for the new location, I’m late I know!
Oh, and the poem is so full of gay’s… LOL
The poem is so full of gay’s… LOL ![]()
Good One!
*congrats for the new location*
thanks. as far as how the Indian movie going audience will react to KKL. My point was that it deals with specific issues which are tabooed in our society. But its nice to see that indians will watch a Pakistani Movie for a change.
