Among other sports; cricket is one SPORT which is rigid to changes. It took ages from; Test form of cricket to ODI’s and then came twenty-20 which quite changed the shape of International cricket. Its more exciting, thrilling, one can arrange more matches in a day. But many veteran cricketers like Waseem Akram, Javed Miandad and Ricky Ponting are still in love with the original form of cricket ie Test cricket.

When I first heard about IPL, I was pretty excited. I was expecting some quality cricket along with the regular excitement and fun. And then we witnessed cricketers being sold out like sheep’s and goats. The only difference is that no goat worth millions of dollars :P The commercialism didn’t stop here. Rich Actors (SRK), Business Tycoons (Vijay Mallya etc) and not so rich girlfriends of quite rich Business men (I am talking about Pretty Zinta here) won the rights of each regional team.

Cricketers seems to be (filthy rich) happy, so are the investors for obvious reasons. But guyz shouldn’t there be any difference between cricket and a Karan Johar film :P or any Bollywood commercial flick for that matter. I am not against Indi masala films, neither I am against 20/20 or new exciting form of cricket for that matter. But people IPL is anything but cricket. I mean golden helmets and pads. Half naked cheerleaders cum bar dancers jumping/dancing on every boundary. Okay I agree I am a bit conservative when it comes to this, but the fact that sex sells does not imply that every picture in the art gallery should have a naked woman. Go on call me a traditionalist but my point makes sense.

ipl.jpg

The only reason of my displeasure is; I was expecting a league of EPL & UEFA standard and I am observing something like WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). So the question is; will the real cricket survive?

The Cricket was dead for me the day the Cricketers were sold, i dun care if its taking place for the past so many years in Football or Soccer or watever tht doesnt matter, what is happening here is nothing bt Money Bucketting( my new version for filling the buckets with $’s ). And all the investors are more into earning then Lighting the real sense of a GAME, the pleasure of Winning or the Spirit that we always call the backbone of any game.
And yeah the chair leaders is indeed like an extra spice in the dish, to spice it and fire it all up. And conservative or what bt many Indians out there wouldnt like to take their families along with them for the matches or even watch with them at home.

@ Nikki

Exactly my point! Even in football the actual spirit of the game is there despite all the money talk. The teams in those leagues have history of quality matches together. One thing that we can never get thru these matches.

@ beeca

its not about muslim or non muslim. its about cricket. Bollywood and cricket can never go hand in hand. Even if our fav. SRK is there in every match cheering for his team.

OMG!!

:( :( :(

I’ve had my head in the clouds!
Cant believe this! :(
Nasty nasty! even european football doesnt have any trshy stuff like this!
I read that a bollywood actress celine danced on stage to a bollywwod song prior to a match featuring Pakistani players, including mr shareefzadon ka baap Inzi and she latyer went on and sl*gged off teh Pakistani players to an indian newspaper saying they made derogatory remarks about her in ‘Hindi’ about her dancing and something about in being ‘indecent’.

DUH .. DUH.. DUH!!

becca on 22 April, 2008 at 10:02 am #

i agree cricket and bollywood can never go together as every field has its own charm nad charisma but adding glamour to cricket is not the soultion to enhance the sprite of the game

supersizeme,
//I read that a bollywood actress celine danced on stage to a bollywwod song prior to a match featuring Pakistani players, including mr shareefzadon ka baap Inzi// what is Inzi supposed to do?Leave the match because Celina Jaitley is dancing or ask somebody to blindfold him? I don’t understand this? All these cheer girls were there in the T-20 world cup and there were not many voices of dissent, why now? I am personally fond of the longer version of the game but I don’t see why we are singling out IPL.You can see scantily clad girls watching cricket matches live in stadiums in Australia and WestIndies, should we not watch those matches?
Ammar,T-20 is not Cricket but it is fun and IPl is promoting it.Glenn Mcgrath bowling to Symonds,Brett Lee bowling to Hayden,Shoib Malik against Afridi and Asif,Ganguly hugging Ponting-lots of fun moments.Lets enjoy it for fun even if it not Cricket.About the skin show when people don’t mind watching item numbers in Hindi Films why should this bother them? I personally don’t like them but everybody has a right to opinion.
SRK,Akshaye Kumar and Preity Zinta have added to the glamour quotient but this is what it is meant to be.For Cricket lets watch Test Matches.
Choose a team of your choice and cheer for it.Ignore the parts you don’t like.

@ Pr3rna

I have no problem if SRK shows up at Cricket Matches and cheer for the team he owns. The same goes with other Bollywood actors, I dont have problems with T20 format of cricket.

But honestly tell me will this tournament really help cricket as a Sport. Cricket is not only about batsmen who just love to throw their bats at every other ball. Its also about bowlers who prove their metal bowling 10 overs or more in test matches & ODI’s.

Its about batsmen who take the match from the middle of the game and finish it in the last overs. And most importantly team spirit. How can you create that when everyone is playing not for his state, province, country or team but for money?

prerna on 23 April, 2008 at 12:09 pm #

I had the same views Ammar, but after watching these matches I realised that it gives equal opportunities to the bowlers as well. The batsmen are supposed to throw their bats at every ball and are thus they are taking risks on every ball they play.About the second point - playing for money.I can’t disagree but the positive part is that relations between players from different countries is improving.Last month during the India -Australia series who could have imagined that Ponting will be helping young Ishant Sharma or Hayden and Bhajji could support each other. This could help Cricket in the long run.On an optimistic note relationships between players of different countries may make Cricket a gentleman’s game again.Experiments like these will help players understand each others culture and incidents like ‘monkeygate’affair would be a thing of the past.

ASAM KHAN on 11 May, 2008 at 9:57 pm #

HI FRIENDS…IPL IS JUST FUN..but there re many things which r argueable…like cheerleaders; auction of a crickerters etc.AND many friends re saying that cheerleaders were also dancing in SA so why it is dispute able thing that they re dancing in indo-pak….but let me clear that we have our own traditions in which women re given high values…while west had lost their diginity…WOMEN ARE DE VALUED,,,so if they perform these sex dances they re welcomed but in their own count but not to spoil asian young generations ……….

ASAM KHAN on 11 May, 2008 at 10:02 pm #

T 20 is giving jerks to the crickerters and i am damn sure that TEST CRIC WILL BE DEMOLISH FROM THE HORIZON OF THIS WORLD…and t 20 is just a tukka cricket in which one player can triumph to his team but in ODIS AND TESTS whole team should be balance and everybody has to perform…….

عمار - aMmAr on 13 May, 2008 at 12:21 pm #

Welcome to ronin Asam and have fun here.

Umar Farooq Kalson on 6 June, 2008 at 8:05 am #

getting varieties of comment on this, well such tournament just organized to give advantage to marketed companies, nothing is for cricket, one is hiring well known cricketers to just market his/her brand.

In IPL, players got max money on the basis of their popularity, not for their talent.

Just exploding the cricket culture.

عمار - aMmAr on 10 June, 2008 at 12:55 am #

Thats exactly wat happens when completely commercialize a thing Umar!

Thank you for your comments.
